Light Metropolis Ruhr
In the process of transforming the old industrial Ruhr region into the modern Ruhr metropolis, LIGHT has played a central role and still does. Outstanding artists, architects and designers made use of the technical possibilities of light in order to create signs of living change that are often visible from far.
Apart from the Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst in Unna (centre of international light art), lasting works of light art have been installed in public spaces such as Dan Flavin’s work at the Wissenschaftspark Rheinelbe (science park). The ‘Yellow Markers’ in Bönen and Kamp-Lintfort, both by Mischa Kuball, raise a particular stir, as do the spectacular illuminations ‘Monochromatic red and blue’ by Speirs and Major at the Kokerei Zollverein (coking plan) and the light orchestration by Jonathan Park at the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. These works and numerous future projects such as the world’s first Biennale of International Light Art in the Ruhr metropolis make a lasting impression on Europe’s map of light.
In the year of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 we invite you to experience all facets of the works of light art and light-events that were selected by a committee according to determined criteria.
