Ensemble of pedestrian area on Bahnhofstraße, Herne

Works of light of a heterogeneous character and by different artists determine the pedestrian area on Bahnhofstraße in Herne by night. The effects range from laser beam to light walls by artist Günther Dohr in the railway underpass and illuminated stone pillars by Jürgen LIT Fischer and Peter Brdenk.

Light walls
Günther Dohr, 2001

Differently coloured fluorescent tubes, mounted in rectangular light boxes, form a changing play of colours along the platform walls. Like in some of his other works, Günther Dohr creates an extremely subtle and precisely nuanced light painting reminding of the colour field minimalism of the Sixties.

Light point Herne
Jürgen LIT Fischer and Peter Brdenk, 2001

Four pillars rise from the ground on Bahnhofstraße, grouped around a circular floor plate. Each pillar has a massive acrylic arm pointing the way. The end of each arm, or rather the cut surface of each acrylic pillar, is illuminated in a different colour, thus forming four light points.

Light sculpture neon fields
Günther Dohr, 1999/2000

The four-part light sculpture at the crossing of Bahnhofstraße/Neustraße consists of frames of different sizes, set on poles and radiating light from coloured neon tubes. Their abstract light painting is clearly set off from the commercial neon signs in their surroundings.

"Die Herner Leuchten" (lamps of Herne)
Maik Löbbert and Dirk Löbbert, 2002

The ‚Herner Leuchten’ by the Löbbert brothers, installed at Kirchhofstraße junction, are also part of the ensemble in the Bahnhofstraße pedestrian area. The lamps surround an old streetlight from Wilhelminian times and create a playful light effect at the end of the boulevard.
