New housing space and thereby urban space was created on the site of the former Mont Cenis coal mine in the context of the International Buildingexhibition Emscherpark. Core of this urban development is a large glass hall, comprising a community hall, library, further education academy and hotel, arranged as ‚houses in a house’. This central hall is surrounded by an oval of cottonwood trees, which the artist Mischa Kuball parallels with an oval of steles. With their blue light heads these steles not only mark the newly created urban space that merges into the landscape, but also create a starry line spreading out in the darkness.
